You want to talk to yourself instead of listening to yourself. That’s right: I want you to start talking to yourself. Don’t listen to the voice in your head that tells you things are too hard or you’re too tired. Instead, talk to yourself. Tell yourself, “You can do this!” and “I will achieve my goals!” Stating your intentions – whether out loud or in your head – can have a significant impact on your discipline and behavior.

Affirmations are positive statements that you say to yourself to combat the negative thoughts in your head. Use affirmations to state your intentions and what you want to do. Consistently using affirmations can change your behavior and thought patterns. Affirmations allow you to refocus on how you want to behave. If you practice using them enough you can start to develop new patterns and behaviors.

Positive affirmations can help you perform better at work. Affirmations reduce anxiety, increase self-confidence, and motivate you to complete tasks. Self-affirmations reduce stress levels and create positive changes in behavior when used correctly. Sure, there are skeptics out there. You may be slightly skeptical right now. But it has been proven that positive affirmations create positive change in your life when practiced consistently. You have to practice it and get better over time, which is exactly the case with any skill. You can be skeptical if you want, or you can start using the tool and improve with practice.

I’m not suggesting that you become the “Little Engine that Could” and say silly things out loud, but I am suggesting that you find a self-talk phrase that works for you and use it to remind yourself of the path you want to take. Find a phrase or sentence that reminds you to stay on track with your goals. Something that refocuses you to do what you want to do instead of what you feel like doing at the moment. It can be a Bible verse, something your father told you, or something you read in a book. Literally anything! Create a self-talk phrase that helps you live your life on purpose and use it when you get tired or don’t feel like doing something.

Your self-talk phrase should be unique to you and your goals. What statement refocuses you to live the life you want? What statement motivates you to complete a task when you don’t feel like it? It doesn’t have to be a motivational quote either. I’ve used the phra

se “Take control” to remind myself that I’m in control of my decisions and to have discipline so I am in control of my life. Every time I didn’t feel like getting up or going to work out, I would tell myself “Take Control”. It can be anything at all that you use to remind yourself to have discipline and live the life you want. Here are some other affirmations that might stimulate you:

  • Pain is temporary. Pride is forever.

  • Be where your feet are.

  • Fight through it.

  • Just do it.

  • Blessed not stressed.

  • Live. Love. Laugh.

  • Starting is winning.

  • My Family deserves the best.

  • One a day at a time.

Choose a phrase that you can say to yourself to help you push through that initial pain of discipline. Or choose a phrase that will help you have more focus, enjoy your life more, or have more gratitude. Write that phrase down anywhere and everywhere you want! The key is to choose a simple phrase that gets you back on the path you need to be on to live the life you want. If you need more discipline, then choose a phrase that helps you stay on track. If you need more gratitude, choose a phrase that helps you be more thankful. This is a great tool to remind you of how you want to live your life. When you get off course – as you sometimes will –say your self-talk phrase to refocus. Don’t listen to yourself. Instead, talk to yourself and be intentional about your life!
